BirthdayBetrayal

When I stepped into Eric’s office building, I immediately understood why his mother had sounded so stunned. The lobby was chaos. Two security guards stood near the elevators while employees clustered in nervous groups, whispering. Then I saw Eric. He was sitting in a chair near reception, pale as paper, his expensive suit wrinkled and his expression shattered. The watch gleamed on his wrist like a spotlight. A woman I recognized from his company’s holiday party stood nearby crying. Another man was shouting about forged invoices and missing funds. As I approached, Eric’s mother appeared beside me. “He used company accounts to hide personal debts,” she said quietly. “The audit started weeks ago. This morning they found everything.” Eric looked up and saw me. For the first time since leaving me, he seemed genuinely afraid. The promotion he expected was gone. His job was gone. Investigators were carrying boxes from his office. The future he had chosen over honesty was collapsing in front of hundreds of witnesses.

Then came the part nobody expected. Eric’s mother stepped forward, grabbed his wrist, and unclasped the watch. “This was never yours,” she said. She turned and pressed it into my hands. Eric didn’t argue. He couldn’t. The crowd watched in silence as years of arrogance drained from him. I looked at the watch I had sacrificed so much to buy and felt something surprising: relief. Not revenge. Relief. Because the man I loved had never really existed. The man sitting there had revealed himself. I walked out carrying the watch and my dignity. Behind me, Eric remained surrounded by consequences he had created himself. For the first time in days, I smiled. Karma had arrived without my help.
